The iRxReminder platform empowers researchers and their study participants to complete their study tasks. Researchers know exactly how the participants are following the protocol, and can intervene with those participants who are not, getting them back on track, staying in the study, and finishing as scheduled.
Using the iRxControl Center to deploy and monitor participants, and the iRxCapture Pro and ESmCapture apps to follow medication taking and symptom reporting, and the iLidRx pill dispensing pod to validate medication dispensing, researchers get better data, finish their studies on schedule, and save the additional 30% costs that result from participants leaving a study unannounced, dropping out, and the extra time required for the last person in to complete the study.
The Non-adherence Problem
Taking medications correctly is a big problem in medicine. We have effective medications for many chronic conditions, but people are not good at taking their medicines. In fact, the CDC (2015) reports 700K ER visits, 341K hospitalizations and 125K deaths each year, are directly attributable to not taking medications correctly. This translates to more than $320 billion in avoidable healthcare costs.
The number of older adults is doubling by 2030, and costs will also grow. Despite this urgency no solution tried, from no tech (pill organizers), to low tech (text messages, phone services, alarmed pillboxes), to state-of-the-art solutions (wireless pill caps; connected pillboxes) have meaningfully impacted the problem.

The Adherence Solution
We do that with our 3–component system. Our cloud-based iRxControl center is used by the healthcare team to deploy regimens and get information back in real time. Patients utilize our apps for medication support, symptom reporting, and patient education. Pill dispensing and monitoring are done with the iLidRx, our IoT pill dispensing pod. The platform’s unique component, it’s simple for pharmacists to load and program and simple for the patient to use. Simply Hold, Place, and Tilt™ to dispense.
Steps to use the iLidRx pod in your research

A pharmacist, pharmacists technician, or other qualified healthcare professional can fill the iLidRx pod. Each iLidRx pod holds up to 90-days supply of a single medication.

The iLidRx pod is programmed with dosing windows, the range of times for each medication to be taken. Dosing windows can be narrow or wide.
In every case the LED lights up green at the start, turns yellow in the middle in conjunction with an alert on the person's smart device (phone, tablet, wearable), and turns red as the window is about to close, again in conjunction with a final alert.

Inductive charging is used to charge the pod. The pod should be charged daily, but can be carried around during the day if needed for midday medications.
A midday dispense in the morning can also be set up, so midday pills only can be carried without the pod. The iRxCapture app is then used to confirm medication taking at the proper dosing time.

When the iLidRx pod LED is clear it will not dispense medication. When a dosing window is entered, the LED lights up in a bright green. Within the window the dosage, whether 1, 2, 3, or 4 pills can be dispensed. Once the medication is dispensed, the LED turns off, and a confirmation of dispensing is sent to the iRxCapture Pro App. It is then shared with the iRxControl Center.

Place you hand over the pod with your finger on the touch sensor. The pod fits comfortably under the palm. It is held exactly like a computer mouse and is about the same size.

With the finger on the sensor, pick the pod up, place it on your hand or on a flat surface such as a table.
Dispense: Tilt Details
Holding the pod on your hand, tilt the pod towards the hole. With the hold, place, and tilt completed the pod mechanism is triggered. You will hear the motor briefly so you know its dispensing.

The hold, place, and tilt™ procedure we call gesture-based dispensing. It helps make the pod child resistant. You can only take the medication at the right time and in the right amount. So this elimates the possibility of overdosing.

Once the pill is dispensed, this event is sent to the the iRxCapture Pro app, and it is acknowledged, recorded, and shared with the research team.
